DescriptionThe truck is a Ford F350 Heavy Duty Crewcab long bed and is a real head-turner, good fun to drive on it's own. It is a 7.3 litre turbo-diesel four speed auto, with the fifth wheel hitch as well as conventional towing equipment.
The trailer is a 2003 Thor Tahoe Transport, which has a dedicated double bedroom (proper queen sized bed) shower/loo, vanity unit etc and kitchen with all usual American refinements including full oven, four burner hob and microwave. In the rear (accessed by a full width drop-down ramp with extensions) ia another drop-down double bed, and two sofa-beds which are smaller doubles.
The sofa beds fold away giving a large loading space where I have carried MGs and even a Volvo Estate!
The trailer has a Gross Vehicle weight rating of 6136Kg against an unladen weight of 3764Kg giving a payload availability of 2372Kg. Looking at The truck specs. If it were a 7.5l petrol engine then the max gross train weight would be 8392Kg. The diesel is rated higher, but I could not find the figure. Suffice to say that it is above 8250. The Truck weighs 2766Kg, so deducting that from the 8250 gives 5484. Taking the trailer UVW of 3764 from that gives a payload availability of 1720Kg - ample for a full load of tools and pretty much any racecar.
The maximum car area length is 4.3m. The width is 2.3m for the first 2.7m (the area closest to the rear loading ramp) and then there is some incursion from the wheel arches, and the last 1.6m is 2.1m wide.
Once the vehicle is out the whole area becomes living space, with two fold down upholstered bench sofas, which both can convert to small double beds. There is a swing-down full queen sized double bed in the rear as well. The main double bedroom is at the front, and is permanent living space along with the bathroom and kitchen.
There are numerous compartments underneath the floor and accessible through exterior doors giving plenty of storage. Apart from the car, you don't need to have anything inside the trailer. There are also roof rails, which I have used to carry tyres though I normally carry the tyres in the truck bed. The truck also has a full width tool box.
The truck mounted electric brake controller is a Draw-Tite 5100 whatever that means. The truck does have air-brake outlets as well but no air brakes are fitted to the trailer. The electric brakes work extremely well, and the manual indicates that you can adjust them pre-trip to allow for terrain, load and weather conditions. I have never done that.
This has been a totally reliable rig and very practical.
